monday morning inspiration

Ok- it's a new week and a new month! thought I'd start the day off with something beautiful. This painting (yes- it's a painting!) was done in 1771 by Swiss artist Jean-Étienne Liotard-- it's part of the Frick's collection here in New York, and when I saw it for the first time a few months ago I was awestruck by how modern it was- totally revolutionary, the mixed media effect, the raw wood grain backdrop, the delicacy of the colors and the crinkly realism of the little slips of paper. Truly visionary-- borne from someone's imagination, inspiration, and two human hands-- no digital assistance here, folks.
